Bush Spin in the Middle East

March 14, 2005

All sorts of rumors were flying over Karen Hughes return to Washington. It turns out that she will be heading up the marketing arm of the State Department. There are many different ways of looking at this. Hughes is Bush’s closest advisor and the person he calls for when he has a really tough job to do. This could be his best stab at “winning” the PR battle of the Middle East. While I have a problem with the idea of “marketing” the U.S., I can see it as just another form of diplomacy. Hughes has gotten results in the past. Bush is serious about America’s image in the Middle East now. This can even be seen a serious diplomatic step (Coupled with Iran).

Update: Fred Kaplan is pessimistic on her chances.
